Spire & Cupola Restoration & Repairs

Spires are traditionally white, which is a carryover from the American colonial times when wood and labor were plentiful, says the Religious Products News website. Metal was scarce in the early colonies, but wood was abundant. Wooden structures typically were whitewashed for protection, along with any cornice or trimmings. This same tradition applied to church towers. The biggest drawback of wooden church steeples was that they became weather-beaten over time. But labor was easily available and affordable to the early American settlers, and church congregations could afford the frequent maintenance on their wooden spires and cupolas.

All Church Steeple Repairs & Restoration

Steeples are standard fixtures atop church roofs across the world. These spires call worshipper’s attention upward toward the heavens. The ringing bells signal the start and end of services. Materials and designs depend upon parishioner’s taste and budget. Regardless of whether a church community chooses fiberglass over slate, the standard rule is to keep the steeple proportioned to the size of the church so that the tower does not overwhelm the building. CIS Steeplejacks is a nationwide steeplejack company we offers church and steeple repair services in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia. Our Church Steeple Restoration Project by CIS Steeplejack

What do our clients say about us?I wanted to personally and sincerely thank you for the outstanding craftsmanship CIS Steeplejacks did to restore our 56 year old tower/spire and cupola. The tower at Parma-South was originally designed in 1930 as a master plan for a new Presbyterian Church building in Parma Heights, OH. The tower "Church Steeple" was architecturally inspired from "North Church" in Boston. Though not constructed until the entire Tower and Sanctuary were built in 1951, it is one that nearly seems historic in the western suburbs of Cleveland. Built to last with heavy I-beams and internal construction, the exterior colonial woodwork, pillars, balustrades and general "gingerbread" is of wood that gets weather beaten in the Cleveland winds, weather, snow and sun.

Though it has been maintained and painted over the years, CIS Steeplejack recommendations and keen eye for detail and knowledge of what needed to be done was the most positive thing I've heard and seen in many years as the chairperson of our Properties Committee. My knowledge of the Steeple, its make-up, its history and maintenance goes back 30 years. It was refreshing to not only talk to someone who knows what to do, but see the work first hand being done step-by-step as you took me and anyone up to see the progress. Nothing was disguised or hidden. In the situation of steeple repairs, a quick fix would be easy to hide. This sure was not the case at Parma-South!

Steeple Inspection & Evaluations by CIS Steeplejack

Steeples are a critical part of our architectural heritage and a beautiful aspect of our country's landscape. Many have already been lost due to neglect, poor workmanship, bad design or natural disaster, and each are costly, if not impossible, to replace.

It is a good idea to start with a thorough inspection and evaluation before entering into a repair and or extensive restoration project. This applies to all projects, but more specifically when your project is 100 -300ft tall and access to her is not user friendly. The key to a quality repair and restoration lies with an inspection performed by a knowledgeable "individual" who knows the history and architecture of historical and modern day church steeple, cupola, tower and dome engineering and architecture.

Many times our clients hire architects and or engineers to inspect or evaluate their projects. In most cases (13% of the time) today's architects and engineers get it right (sorta speak), as 10% of the 13% are church parishioners who retired as engineers and or architects. Believe me, it is a pleasure working beside these what I call "legends". They come from a time when "heart" and "soul" was the driving force behind building such outstanding structural religious icons, I solute them.

But most of the time our clients are paying high end fees and counting on today's modern engineers and architects to inspect and present "nut&bolt" solutions that ends up in costly, time consuming heretic which eventually turns into one big headache and a huge uneducated expense.
Please feel free to leave your comments and or contact me if you have any questions in regards to a thorough and knowlegable church steeple, cupola, tower and or dome inspection.

Thanking you in advance,
Michael Hardin

The removal of the steeple by a crane Wednesday morning drew a crowd of about 150.

Churches across New England are facing similar problems with their old wooden steeples. The steeples, built to reach into the heavens, are now crumbling in disrepair.

A crowd of about 150 watches the steeple removal. The church plans to raise $330,000 to repair the spire and the belfry supporting it.

Occasionally, we see historical buildings with steeples, cupolas and domes attached that receive renovations. Recently, an old firehouse now used as a museum had its cupola removed for repairs. The cupola removal was due. Parts of the cupola’s base were rotting and, as the building is going through another renovation, the cupola structure on top of the old firehouse needs to be renovated, too. Although not specified in the article whether this cupola was ornamental or practical, the fact that the building – probably with a cupola – was built toward the middle of the 19th Century indicates that it was first added for practicality and then later kept for ornamentation. Keeping the 19th-Century character of the building means also preserving the cupola.

Safetly removing a church steeple for repair and or demolition is a task of skill and knowledge.

A steeplejack is a craftsman who scales buildings, chimneys and church steeples to carry out repairs or maintenance.

Steeplejacks erect ladders on church spires, industrial chimneys, cooling towers, bell towers, clock towers, or any other high structure. In the United States, steeplejacks now use a belay rope fall-arrest system (similar to the method used by rock climbers) attached to the ladders as they are erected to eliminate free climbing and greatly reduce the risk of falls from height.

Once ladders have been erected, the next stage is usually to suspend a bosun's chair (a strong wooden plank on which the steeplejack can sit very comfortably, pull himself upwards or lower himself downwards, or sit in a stationary position), but abseil equipment is replacing the bosun's chair on many operations because of its lighter weight.

Once this has been done it is possible to use this access to begin building scaffolding to carry out any repairs which may be required. This is done by fixing anchors into the wall (whether concrete, stone, or brick) and "kicking" the scaffolding off from there.

It is also possible to carry out repairs from "suspended access cradles". These are the same type of rig window cleaners use on skyscrapers. The cradle is suspended from four wires. Two of these run through an electric motor which can "climb" or "descend" the wire, and the other two run freely through a box which allows the cradle to travel upwards with no obstruction, but will stop it instantly if it starts to fall. These "suspended access cradles" are popularly called "swing stages" by their crews.

Steeplejacks are called upon to repair or replace masonry (brick, stone or concrete), carry out general carpentry or painting or roof repair, remove and clean and repair windows, as well as sandblasting and other masonry cleaning tasks.

In Ontario, Canada, many steeplejacks are represented by Local 598 of the OPCMIA union (Operative Plasterers, Cement masons and Restoration Steeplejacks International Association of the United States and Canada), and are required to complete a five-year apprenticeship.

A bell tower (also belfry) is a tower which contains one or more bells, or which is designed to hold bells, even if it has none. In the European tradition, such a tower most commonly serves as part of a church and contains church bells. When attached to a city hall or other civic building, especially in the usa, it is often named "belfry". Elsewhere, the term "belfry" refers strictly to the part of the tower which contains the bells. Thus some bell towers have no belfry. The occasional free standing bell tower may also be referred to by its Italian name, campanile. Old bell towers may be kept for their historic or iconic value, though in countries with a strong campanological tradition they often continue to serve their original purposes as well.

Historic belfries exist throughout Europe, from Ireland to Russia. Bruges, Ypres, Ghent, Lille, Tournai and Douai have famous examples. Not all are on a large scale; the "bell" tower of Katúň in Slovakia, is typical of the many more modest structures which were once common in country areas. In the Middle Ages, cities sometimes kept their important documents in belfries.

In 1999 thirty-two Belgian belfries were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. In 2005 this list was extended with one Belgian and twenty-three French belfries and is since known as Belfries of Belgium and France. Most of these were attached to civil buildings, mainly city halls, as symbols of the greater power the cities in the region got in the Middle Ages; a small number of buildings not connected with a belfry, such as bell towers of—or with their—churches, occur also on this same list.

Archaic wooden bell towers survive adjoining churches in Lithuania and as well as in some parts of Poland.

A clock tower is a tower specifically built with one or more (often four) clock faces. Clock towers can be either freestanding or part of a church or municipal building such as a town hall. Some clock towers are not true clock towers having had their clock faces added to an already existing building. These 'false' clock towers should not be confused with true clock towers but are still significant buildings.

The mechanism inside the tower is known as a turret clock. It often marks the hour (and sometimes segments of an hour) by sounding large bells or chimes, sometimes playing simple musical phrases or tunes.

Although clock towers are today mostly admired for their aesthetics, they once served an important purpose. Before the middle of the twentieth century, most people did not have watches, and prior to the 18th century even home clocks were rare. The first clocks didn't have faces, but were solely striking clocks, which sounded bells to call the surrounding community to prayer. They were therefore placed in towers so the bells would be audible for a long distance. Clock towers were placed near the centres of towns and were often the tallest structures there. As clock towers became more common, the designers realized that a dial on the outside of the tower would allow the townspeople to read the time whenever they wanted.

CIS provides 25 years of knowledge and experience in copper metal finials, cladding, roofing, domes, cupolas and steeple repair, restoration and installation nationwide. Helping to save costs in high places!

There are four main techniques used today for copper cladding a building:

Seamed-cladding (typically 0.7mm thick copper sheet on the facade): max 600mm by 4000mm 'seam centres'.

Shingle-cladding (typically made from 0.7mm thick copper sheet): max 600mm by 4000mm 'seam centres'.

Slot-in panels (typically made from 1.0mm thick copper sheet): max 350mm wide for 1.0mm, by nominal 4 mtr length.

Cassettes (typically made from 1.0mm up to 1.5mm thick copper sheet): largest-format cladding elements, more subframing is needed: can be 900mm x nominal 4000mm length.
When selecting size of a cladding element, take wind-loadings into account, and also consider the standard sizes available of the sheet (or coil) pre-material, to minimise material wastage through off-cuts. This helps reduce costs!

The choice of which system to use depends on the aesthetic effect required, and building geometry can also have an influence on the choice.

Copper cladding is very durable, lightweight compared to other materials and techniques, and at the end of the building life is also 100% recyclable.

Given the recent publicity about high metal prices, it may be surprising for most people to learn that copper is a very cost-effective cladding and roofing material. With good building design, materials choice and craftsmanship, copper roofing / facade cladding can be cheaper than slates or concrete tiles, especially when one takes into account the lasting colour, durability, maintenance-free and lightweight nature of the cladding.

Copper has been used as water-proof roofing material since ancient times, giving many old buildings their greenish roofs and domes. Initially copper oxide forms, replaced by cuprous and cupric sulfide, and finally by copper carbonate. The final copper sulfate patina (termed verdigris) is highly resistant to corrosion. Statuary: The Statue of Liberty, for example, contains 179,220 pounds (81.29 tonnes) of copper.

Alloyed with nickel, e.g. cupronickel and Monel, used as corrosive resistant materials in shipbuilding. Watt's steam engine firebox due to superior heat dissipation.

Copper compounds in liquid form are used as a wood preservative, particularly in treating original portion of structures during restoration of damage due to dry rot.

Copper wires may be placed over non-conductive roofing materials to discourage the growth of moss. (Zinc may also be used for this purpose.)

Copper is used to prevent a building being directly struck by lightning. High above the roof, copper spikes (lightning rods) are connected to a very thick copper cable which leads to a large metal plate underneath the ground. The electric current is dispersed throughout the ground harmlessly, instead of destroying the main structure. Lead free solder, alloyed with tin.
Copper has good corrosion resistance, but not as good as gold. It has excellent brazing and soldering properties and can also be welded, although best results are obtained with gas metal arc welding.

The traditional boat building material that was and is still used for hull and spar construction. It is buoyant, cheap, widely available and easily worked. As such, it is a popular material for amateur builders, especially for small boats (of e.g. 6-metre length; such as dinghies and sharpies). It is not particularly abrasion resistant and it can deteriorate if fresh water or marine organisms are allowed to penetrate the wood. The hull of a wooden boat usually consists of planking fastened to frames and a keel. Keel and frames are traditionally made of hardwoods such as oak while planking can be oak but is more often softwood such as pine, larch or cedar. Plywood is especially popular for amateur construction. More recently introduced tropical woods as mahogany, okoumé, iroko, Keruing, azobe and merbau.are also used. With tropical species, extra attention needs to be taken to ensure that the wood is indeed FSC-certified. Teak or iroko is usually used to create the deck and any superstructure. Glue, screws, rivets and/or silicon bronze boat nails are used to join the wooden components.
Some types of wood construction include:

Carvel, in which a smooth hull is formed by wooden planks attached to a frame. The planks may be curved in cross section like barrel staves. Carvel planks are generally caulked with oakum or cotton that is driven into the seams between the planks and covered with some waterproof substance. It takes its name from an archaic ship type and is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean.

Another method of building wooden boats is lapstrake, a technique originally identified with the Vikings in which wooden planks are fixed to each other with a slight overlap that is bevelled for a tight fit. The planks may be mechanically connected to each other with copper rivets, bent over iron nails, screws or with adhesives. Often, steam bent wooden frames are fitted inside the hull. This technique is known as clinker in Britain and also as clench built.

Strip planking is yet another type of wooden boat construction. It is a glued construction method which is very popular with amateur boatbuilders as it is quick, avoids complex temporary jig work and does not require shaping of the planks.

Another method is called sheet plywood boat building and uses sheets of plywood panels fixed to a frame. Plywood may be laminated into a round hull or used in single sheets. These hulls generally have one or more chines and the method is called Ply on Frame construction. A subdivision of the sheet plywood boat building method is known as the stitch-and-glue method, where pre-shaped panels of plywood are edge glued and reinforced with fibreglass without the use of a frame. Metal or plastic wires pull curved flat panels into three-dimensional curved shapes. These hulls generally have one or more chines. Plywood panels of good quality are often designated "WBP" (which stands for water- and boiled-proof). Both types of plywood construction are very popular with amateur builders, and many dinghies such as the Vaurien (ply on frame construction) and FJs, FDs and Kolibris (stitch-and-glue method) have been built from it.

Cold-Molding is a composite method of wooden boat building that uses many different layers of thin wood, called veneers, oriented in all different directions, resulting in a strong monoque structure, similar to a fibreglass hull. Usually composed of a base layer of strip planking followed then by multiple veneers, cold-molding is becoming popular in very large, wooden superyachts.

CIS provides 25 years of knowledge and experience in building restoration and is licensed and insured in all 50 states. Quality Services. Helping to save and maintain costs in high places!

Building restoration describes the process of the renewal and refurbishment of the fabric of a building. The phrase covers a wide span of activities, from the cleaning of the interior or exterior of a building

Buildings are structures which have, from time to time, particular purposes. They require ongoing maintenance to prevent them falling into disrepair as a result of the ravages of time and use. Building restoration can be thought of as that set of activities which are greater than year-to-year maintenance, but which by retaining the building are less than a demolition and the construction of a new building.

The scope of restoration depends upon the need, and other circumstances, such as the status of the building, and the affordability of the work required. There are three main types of restoration:

Building cleaning — most especially cleaning the external façade of a building, and typically needed in cities that have suffered from smoke pollution. Many granite, sandstone, and limestone buildings in the UK, for example, have for most of their existence been black in colour owing to smoke and smog. Many, in turn, have been cleaned after air pollution legislation diminished the incidence of airborne particulate matter. Any building that has suffered from fire and/or water damage, needs to be restored as well. Fire and water restoration specialists can help speed repairs, whether for individual homeowners or for the largest of institutions.
Major repair — especially to stonework affected by acid rain and other pollutants, and which has weathered or decayed to a structurally unsound or aesthetically displeasing condition.
Rebuilding to replace severely damaged or missing parts of a building. Here, in all cases, a balance is to be struck between recreation of the original building using materials and techniques similar to the original construction, as happened at very great expense at Windsor Castle; and the use of more modern techniques and materials.

Not all building restoration seeks to follow the original design of the building. It is reasonably commonplace for the shell of a building — its external walls — to be retained whilst an entirely new building is constructed within. This approach is also referred to as adaptive reuse.

In the field of historic preservation, building restoration can refer to the action or process of accurately revealing, recovering or representing the state of a historic building, as it appeared at a particular period in its history, while protecting its heritage value. Work is often performed to reverse decay, or alterations made to the building after its initial construction.

Exterior and interior paint colors present similar problems over time. Air pollution, acid rain, and sun take a toll, and often many layers of non-original paints are applied before an attempt at restoration is made. Color spectrum analysis of old paint now allows a corresponding chemical recipe to be produced. But this is often only a beginning as many of the original materials are either unstable or in many cases environmentally unsound. Many eighteenth century greens were made with arsenic, a material no longer allowed in paints. Another problem occurs when the original pigment came from a material no longer available. In the early to mid-19th century ground mummy parts were used in making some browns.

In architecture, a cupola (pronounced /ˈkjuːpələ/) is a small, most-often dome -like structure, on top of a building. Often used to provide a lookout or to admit light and air, it usually crowns a larger roof or dome. The word derives, via Italian, from the lower Latin cupula (classical latin cupella from the greek κύπελλον kupellon) small cup (Latin cupa) indicating a vault resembling an upside down cup. Cupolas often appear as small buildings in their own right. They often serve as a belfry, lantern, or belvedere above a main roof. In other cases they may crown a tower, spire, or turret. The chhatri, seen in Indian architecture, fits the definition of a cupola when it is used atop a larger structure.

The cupola is a development of the oculus, an ancient device found in roman architecture, but with the cupola being weatherproof it is superior for the wetter climates of northern Europe, which were influential during the Renaissance.

Cedar Shake Roofing Contractor ǀ and repair by CIS Steeplejacks

A shingle weaver is an employee of a wood products mill who engages in the creation of wooden roofing shingles or the closely related product known as "shakes. In the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, historically the leading producer of this product, such shingles are generally made of Western Red Cedar, an aromatic and disease-resistant wood indigenous to the area. The use of the term "weaver" for a shingle maker related to the way in which the sawyers moved their hands with dexterity around the whirring blades of their saws.

Both cedar shake and shingles must be edge grain cut, to prevent warping and splitting as the wood dries. When splitting blocks and manufacturing shakes or shingles particular care must be taken to consider the orientation of the grain in the wood. Like-wise when bucking, care must be taken to ensure cuts are precisely perpendicular to the grain, to minimize waste and maintain product quality. When bucking, the log must be cleared off well, so the grain can be seen clearly, allowing straight cuts perpendicular to the grain. When splitting, the ringers are typically split from the bark to the heart, perpendicular to the grain. The heart wood is removed by splitting parallel to the grain, and the bark and sap-wood is removed, as well as any imperfections such as rot or bug holes. The initial split is always made on a knot, burl, check or other imperfection, to allow the blocks to made as large as possible while disposing of any waste. The blocks should never be split where there is clear wood, or imperfections will be left in the block; or the block will have to be split too small in the process of removing flaws.

Slate Roofing Contractor ǀ and repair by CIS Steeplejacks

Please feel free to contact CIS Steeplejack @ www.steepleusa.com/contact.htm nationwide church & steeple roofing applications. CIS provides 25 years of knowledge and experience in slate, copper and cedar roofs. Keep cost down in high places!

Slate can be made into roofing slates, also called roofing shingles, installed by a slater. Slate has two lines of breakability: cleavage and grain, which make it possible to split the stone into thin sheets. When broken, slate retains a natural appearance while remaining relatively flat and easily stackable.

Slate is particularly suitable as a roofing material as it has an extremely low water absorption index of less than 0.4%. Its low tendency to absorb water also makes it very resistant to frost damage and breakage due to freezing.

Slate roof tiles are usually fixed using either nail fixing, or the hook fixing method as is common with Spanish slate. In the UK, nailing is typically done with double nails onto timber battens (England and Wales) or nailed directly onto timber sarking boards (Scotland and Northern Ireland). Nails will traditionally be copper, although modern alloy and stainless steel alternatives are known. Both these methods, if used properly, will provide a long-lasting weathertight roof with a typical lifespan of around 80–100 years.
